I'm Learning Portuguese
With You

I'm Geordie, a monolingual American moving to Portugal. I tried Duolingo—it didn't stick. I discovered Dreaming Spanish—it worked like magic. But there was no "Dreaming Portuguese." So I built LinguaMama. For me. For you. For all of us learning new languages.

How I Got Here

My journey from monolingual American to language learner didn't start with good intentions. It started with necessity.

🗳️

November 2024: The Decision

After the election, my partner María and I made a decision: we're leaving the United States. We'd been watching expat videos since the pandemic, half entertainment, half fantasy. Suddenly it wasn't fantasy anymore. Portugal became our destination.

Problem: We don't speak Portuguese. María's Cuban mother never taught her Spanish. I'm a typical monolingual American.

December 2024: The Typical Approach

We did what everyone does: downloaded every app. Duolingo, Babbel, Rosetta Stone. Subscribed to YouTube channels. Bought textbooks. Grammar exercises. Vocabulary flashcards. Nothing stuck. It felt like homework, not learning.

After 3 weeks, I could say "olá" and "obrigado." That was about it.
💡

January 2025: The Discovery

Then we found Dreaming Spanish. Young people telling funny stories in beginner Spanish. No English. No translation. Just... watching. At first, bewildering. After a week, something clicked. I started UNDERSTANDING. Not translating. Understanding.

The realization:
This is how I learned English as a baby. Just listening. Absorbing. No rules.
🇵🇹

February 2025: The Problem

Dreaming Spanish worked. But we need Portuguese, not Spanish. I searched everywhere for "Dreaming Portuguese." It doesn't exist. There are Portuguese comprehensible input channels, but none with the quality, structure, and elegance of Dreaming Spanish.

I'm an engineer. I've built systems for 30 years. If it doesn't exist, I'll build it.

My Daily Routine

I use LinguaMama every day. Not because I have to. Because it actually works. Here's what my Portuguese learning looks like.

Morning Coffee (20 minutes)

  • • Same episode: "A Day in the Life"
  • • Watch at A1 level (beginner)
  • • Don't worry about understanding everything
  • • Just listen while I make breakfast
  • • Some days I understand more, some less
🌙

Evening Wind-Down (20 minutes)

  • • Same episode again (repetition is the point)
  • • Some scenes at A2 level now
  • • Notice patterns I didn't catch this morning
  • • Phrases starting to feel familiar
  • • No pressure to "study" or memorize

My Progress After 3 Months

Week 1: Confused. Week 4: Catching individual words. Week 8: Understanding whole episodes. Week 12: Thinking "I actually know Portuguese" for the first time. Not fluent. Not perfect. But... understanding. That's the goal: comprehension first, speaking later.

I'm not fluent. I'm not trying to be. I'm building comprehension. That's what matters.

What Didn't Work vs What Does

I tried the traditional approach first. Here's what I learned.

📚

What Didn't Work for Me

3 weeks of frustration
Duolingo
Felt like a game, not learning. Forgot everything immediately.
Grammar Books
Memorizing verb tables is torture. Couldn't use them in conversation.
Flashcards
1000 words memorized. Still couldn't understand a simple conversation.
Result
Frustration. "I'm too old to learn languages."
📺

What Actually Works

3 months of progress
Just Watch
Same content, over and over. Like childhood TV.
Understand First
No pressure to speak. Build comprehension, speaking comes later.
Repetition Works
Same episode daily. Patterns emerge naturally.
Result
Actual understanding. "I'm actually learning Portuguese!"

Why I Built LinguaMama

I'm an engineer who's built systems for 30 years. This is personal. This is for me.

The Three Reasons

1

I Need It

I'm moving to Portugal. I need to learn Portuguese. "Dreaming Portuguese" doesn't exist. So I'm building it.

2

I Can Build It

I have the skills. AI, content generation, systems architecture. Why not use them to solve my own problem?

3

Others Need It Too

If I need this, others do too. Expats, immigrants, polyglots, lifelong learners. We're all in this together.

This Is a Tool, Not a Course

I'm not a teacher. I'm not selling you a "system" or a "method." I'm a learner who built a tool that works for me. I'm sharing it because maybe it works for you too.

I use LinguaMama every day:
Not because I'm testing it. Because it's the best way I've found to learn Portuguese. If it works for me, it might work for you.

What Makes LinguaMama Different

It's not magic. It's just how learning actually works. Same content, massive repetition, comprehension first.

🔄

Same Content Every Day

Not new content constantly. The SAME episode, over and over. Like watching your favorite childhood movie 50 times. That's how patterns stick.

👂

Understanding Before Speaking

No pressure to talk from day one. Listen first, for as long as it takes. Speaking happens naturally when you're ready.

📈

You Control the Difficulty

Each scene has multiple levels. Start at A1, move to A2 when ready. Or keep some at A1 while others advance. Your pace, your choice.

🌍

Built for Polyglots

Same content in multiple languages. Perfect for comparing, switching, or learning several languages simultaneously.

No "Fluency" Promises

I'm not promising you'll be "fluent in 3 months." That's nonsense. I'm promising you'll understand more Portuguese (or Spanish, or French, or...) than you do now. Comprehension first. That's the goal. That's what works.

Learn With Me

I'm learning Portuguese. You're learning... something. Let's do this together. Same method, different languages. No promises, just progress.

✓ Same content I use daily ✓ Understanding before speaking ✓ No fluency hype, just real progress
